Community Connect - December 2025

Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome to our latest edition of Community Connect, which as ever, summarises just a few of the many exciting things we have been up to at Greenford High School. If you would like to look at past editions of Community Connect, you can find these on our website under the ‘Parents’ tab here. You can also find our fortnightly Parent Connect newsletter in this location too.
I know I say this a lot, but I have genuinely been so proud of all of our students and staff this term. Whilst there are many highlights, I want to draw attention to some key things I have noticed. Firstly, attendance across the school has improved significantly - please keep this up! Your child will achieve much better if they are in school every day. We all know that sticking to a routine also helps with our wellbeing - whilst your child may try to convince you that they need a day off, they will usually be much better served by coming in as usual.
Next, Year 11 are working exceptionally hard, and teaching staff are all in agreement that their attitude, overall as a group, is excellent. Again, please encourage them to keep this up, dipping into a few revision sites over the holidays and reinforcing knowledge that they are less clear on.
Finally, our Post 16 students are doing brilliantly - their combination of hard work, great attendance and stunning commitment to community service in school is wonderful to witness on a daily basis.
Have a wonderful festive break and we look forward to seeing everyone for the return to school on Monday 5th January 2026.

Year 11 Boys' Achievement Trip
On Friday 28th November, GHS staff took 58 Year 11 students to Paccar Scout Camp, Chalfont St. Peters for a Boys’ Achievement outdoor and adventurous trip. Students took part in a range of activities to improve teamwork, motivation, attitude to learning, and to allow them some time out of regular lessons to focus upon the upcoming pre public exams. The activities that students took part in were archery, caving, zip wires, and a gladiator challenge. Students also attended classroom sessions during the trip where we analysed current attainment and set SMART targets for the remainder of the academic year.
All the students that attended worked in a range of challenging environments. The students conducted themselves extremely well and the camp leaders expressed their thanks for the maturity and politeness of the students.
I would like to thank the students and staff who accompanied me on this trip. It was a pleasure to spend a day with a lovely group of polite, mature, and hardworking students.
Mr Harvey

European Day of Languages
Each year Greenford High School celebrates European Day of Languages, which promotes linguistic diversity, encourages language learning, and celebrates the cultural richness that languages bring to our communities. This year the Global School Alliance held a competition to celebrate European Day of Languages, with students being asked to explore how languages open hearts and minds, both their own and those of others.
There were 1034 entries from 515 primary and secondary schools across 17 countries, and the winner of the competition was Year 7 student Jaswant. Huge congratulations to Jaswant and also to Inorah, Muhammad, Sakthi and Samreet who received certificates for their entries.

Basketball season is approaching fast and we look forward to more sporting success in due course.
The Year 10 Netball team (Promise, Lyna, Davina, Aaliyah, Zainab, Ellie, Miley, Lana and Marwa) represented Greenford High School in our first ever entry in the Middlesex Schools Netball Tournament which is predominantly participated in by private schools and very experienced teams.
All of them demonstrated real team spirit, encouraging and coaching each other from the sidelines and during breaks. They were resilient against some very tough opposition, not once giving up. And they all really demonstrated their passion and love for the game. It was fantastic to see the confidence and courage grow as the tournament progressed.
A huge thank you and well done to the girls for being such positive representatives of the school and making the afternoon so enjoyable.

Let's hear it for our incredible Year 7 SPH Athletics teams successes at the Ealing Borough SPH Athletics competition hosted here at GHS!
- The Boys Squad clinched an outstanding 3rd place! Well done, boys—a brilliant performance!
- The Girls Squad absolutely dominated the competition, finishing on top and securing their place in the Championships!
This is a fantastic achievement! The girls' success is a testament to the effort they've poured into their training. Their commitment was clear to see with consistent attendance at Thursday lunchtime sessions with Miss Gemmel and Mrs Conyard, and Monday afternoon sessions with Ms. Rayner.
Through vigorous testing and training, every athlete was matched to the perfect event for their strengths, demonstrating how much hard work and marginal gains can lead to spectacular success. They were fully prepared, and it showed!
Please join us in giving both squads—especially our victorious girls—a massive round of applause!

We are more than just about representative teams though, with hundreds of students enjoying sport in after school clubs. One walk-around on a random Wednesday afternoon I counted over 100 students playing sport after school. All abilities, all genders, all age-ranges, all completely FREE.
Thank you to my wonderful colleagues in the PE department for giving our young people a platform to perform on.

Somali Community Coffee Morning
Just before half-term, Mr Mohamed hosted a coffee morning for parents and carers of our Somali students. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to come together, ask questions, and strengthen the partnership between home and school. A huge thank you to him for organising the event, creating such a welcoming environment, and clearly explaining the importance of our school procedures to parents. His support is invaluable in helping our families feel informed, confident, and connected to our school community.

Post 16 Update
While Year Twelve have settled into Post 16 beautifully and are committed particularly to their roles in supporting our community, Year Thirteen are focussing well and doing some excellent preparation for their January mock exams. This is all achieved while juggling their UCAS and Apprenticeship applications. A third of the year group have applied and the rest will be submitted by December 10th. While the elation of each send off is palpable, the effort put into each absolutely deserved the celebration. While completing their applications, students are also doing interview preparation and starting to be offered interviews and assessment centres for Post 18 options. It’s all getting very real and the Year 13s are rising to the challenge beautifully. It was a pleasure to have parents in to the UCAS Coffee morning in mid November - it’s always a great chance to reflect on how far our Year 13s have come since Year 7.

Library Update
We have a great start to the school year, with all Year 7 pupils choosing a free book as part of the BookTrust BookBuzz initiative. You can find out more about Bookbuzz, and how it helps the transition from Primary to Secondary School here. We hope that pupils enjoy reading their new books!
All staff and students automatically become a member of the library when they join the school. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their library loans, and they can do this by logging into our library catalogue. From here, they can check which books they have on loan, see when they are due back, and can reserve books.
E-book library
As well as having a well stocked school library, we also have a great eBook library, called Wheelers. The eBook library link can be found here. All pupils will have been emailed their usernames and passwords, but if in doubt, they can email ghslib@greenford.ealing.sch.uk to check. Please do encourage your son or daughter to borrow books from the library before the end of term, and to keep reading over the holidays.

Careers
We are really proud of our careers programme at GHS.
Last half-term, both Year 8s and 13s had their first careers fair where they were able to meet representatives from many different organisations, giving them an insight into their career paths.
Year 10s also visited the BlackRock finance company where one of our alumni works. The company was so impressed with the students that they will be coming into school in January to run workshops for 100 Year 12 Business and Economics students to give them an insight into finance.
On Thursday 20th November, our Year 10s took part in their mock interviews. Again, representatives from various organisations interviewed students and then gave them valuable feedback so they are ready for their work experience in the summer.
Over 250 Year 10 parents have already given their consent for work experience and Year 10 students are working hard in securing their placements.
As well as these events, every fortnight, Years 7-11 take part in careers activities during form time, where they explore different aspects of the workplace. Last month, students explored what soft skills are required in the workplace and ‘what does success mean to them’.
As well as the above, Mrs Rodway is busy with year 11s who are taking part in a 45-minute Career Guidance meeting, discussing and planning their next steps after their GCSEs and providing career advice and guidance to sixth form students as they plan and apply for their post-18 options.
