Friday 23rd January

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

Well done to all students for behaving extremely well and staying so positive in what is difficult weather and gloomy skies at the moment. I have also been impressed with how many students have been in, on time, every single day.  Let's keep this up!

Something lovely to share this week is that Teach 1st, who we work closely with in recruiting many of our excellent teachers, have produced a promotional video which features influencer and rapper Big Zuu, aswell as many of our students and staff. The film was produced on-site and if you scroll down, you can see the YouTube link to it. We are immensely proud of all the students who were featured - they were brilliant throughout and created a very good impression of the school.  I hope you enjoy viewing it!

I look forward to seeing Year 10 parents on Thursday for Parents' Evening.

Attendance, what can you do to help?

-Establish good bedtime and morning routines, such a breakfast in the morning, checking if they have their equipment. Using their planner is also useful to help them prepare for their lessons the next day.

-Ensure your child arrives at school on time. This encourages habits of punctuality and lessens any possible classroom disruption. If your child arrives after the attendance register has closed without a good reason, this will be recorded as an ‘unauthorised’ absence for that session.

-All absences must be reported to the school for each day of absence (our Attendance Policy explains the school’s expectations and procedures).

-If you know or think that your child is having difficulties attending school, you should contact us. It is better to speak to us sooner rather than later, as most problems can be dealt with very quickly.

-Monitor your child’s mobile phone usage. It is becoming increasingly common that students use their phones for large parts of the evening, impacting their sleep routine. Perhaps set some time-limits to support this.

Year 8s A2L workshop

Last week, all year 8 students took part in an Attitude to Learning workshop to ensure they understood what impact an excellent attitude can have and, in contrast, what impact a poor attitude can have on their prospects.

Students explored what they can do to improve their own attitude and, therefore, grades and the feedback from all staff and students was very positive.

If you have a child in year 8, please do talk to them about what they learnt and how they will continue to improve their attitude for success.

Well done year 8s!

SEN Coffee Morning

As part of our Parental Engagement work, our SEN department invited parents to their coffee morning where Ms Hudson and her team discussed strategies to support all students. Thank you to the SEN department and all the parents that attended.

The importance of reading

  • Reading helps children do well in every subject.
  • Students who read regularly at home make the most progress at school.
  • It also supports focus, wellbeing, and confidence.

How to help your child read at home

  • We expect students to read at home for 20 minutes every day.
  • Try to create a calm space for reading —limit distractions such as phones or TV.
  • Ask your child to read aloud to you. This could be while you’re cooking, tidying up, or on a car journey — find a time that suits your family.
  • Involve reading in everyday life — ask them to read ingredients, signs, or news headlines.
  • Ask them about what they’re reading. You could ask:
    • “What’s the main character like?”
    • “Can you tell me what’s happened so far?”
    • “What do you think will happen next?”

Healthy Eating Workshop

As part of our PHSCE and Personal Development Programme, Year 8s took part in the Healthy Eating Workshop, which taught them about how they can be healthy. This also included the impact of vaping and how this can cause damage.

Stop Press: Teach First and GHS Partnership

From 2010, Greenford High School has been working in partnership with Teach First (Teacher Training provider) where almost 100 staff have completed their training through this pathway.

Last Term, our staff and students took part in a promotional video, and we are so proud of the work that they have been doing.

Well done, Mr Mather who led this project and worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly.
