Friday 13th March

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

We were delighted to open up the school this week as part of the Department for Education's RISE initiative, where successful schools can share their good work with others.  We had great feedback from our visitors, who all talked about what a warm and friendly school we had.

As ever, your children did us proud and continue to work hard and succeed.

Best Wishes,

Mrs M Pye

Headteacher

Y9 GCSE Options

We emailed all parents of students in Y9 in February outlining the GCSE options programme which got underway this half-term.

It’s an exciting stage in their school career as it’s the first time students get to choose some of their courses and your support, as parents, will be crucial.

All Key Stage 4 students – in Y10 and Y11 – study English language, English literature, maths, double science and (in most cases) a foreign language as their core programme.

But they also get to select up to three more option subjects. These include art, business studies, childcare, computer science, D&T product design, drama, economics, food & nutrition, geography, history, IT, media studies, music, photography, PE, psychology, RE, and triple science.

During tutor time – every Tuesday and Friday – Y9 students receive detailed information about the different courses on offer, and this includes viewing short video presentations about each subject.

Parents can help by discussing these sessions with their child – links to the presentations, along with detailed course descriptions, are shared every Friday via Satchel One.

Also, you recently received their Interim 2 report with accurate, up-to-date information about current progress and attainment so you can see which subjects might be most appropriate for them.

And last month, at the Y9 parents’ evening, you were able to meet individual subject teachers where you had the opportunity to ask specific questions about particular courses.

We want you to be fully informed during this process so we will email you again, before Raising Achievement Day on the last day of term, with more information.

Final decisions will need to be made at the start of the summer term and, again, we will provide you with details about how to do this nearer the time.

Celebrations Assemblies this week:

This half-term, Year Teams ensured that students were recognised for their hard work. Assemblies this week celebrated the students with the highest character points for each character strength as well as forms with the lowest behaviour points.

Well done to all the nominees!

On Saturday, we took a team of amazing students to Bechtel Engineering in Chiswick to participate in the regional finals of the First Lego League Competition against 9 other schools. This event is dominated each year by private schools, but GHS threw a spanner in the works this time round!

The students are marked on the following:
- Robot Wars (programming of a Lego robot)
- Innovation project (inventing something new)
- Robot Design (looks and effectiveness of the robot)
- Core Values (teamwork, supporting others etc.)

In ALL areas, we came 2nd, which is a massive achievement and usually enough to win, but this year someone just edged us out of the top spot, leaving with an overall 2nd place finish.

The biggest takeaway is our innovation project (a prototype design for a material detecting camera for Archaeology) has been recommended to the Archaeology Society for review, which has never happened in the history of the regional finals.

The following students did the school, STEM, and each other proud.

We shared our experiences and took on board suggestions on how we can continue to work together.
