Monday 20th April

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back after what I hope was a wonderful break for everyone.

We'll be in full swing now preparing for examinations for our older year groups, and you can see some tips about managing stress below.  I always think the best way to avoid stress is to be organised. If your child dedicates a few hours each evening to revision starting from now, this will avoid any stress later on.  As usual, the key advice is 'be prepared'!

Best Wishes,

Mrs M Pye

Headteacher

Help your child beat exam stress

Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for children and young people and their parents or carers. But there are ways to ease the stress.

Watch for signs of stress

Children and young people who are stressed may:

  • worry a lot
  • feel tense
  • have headaches and stomach pains
  • not sleep well
  • be irritable
  • lose interest in food or eat more than normal
  • not enjoy activities they previously enjoyed
  • be negative and have a low mood
  • feel hopeless about the future

Having someone to talk to about their work can help. Support from a parent, tutor or study buddy can help young people share their worries and keep things in perspective.

Encourage your child to talk to a member of school staff who they feel is supportive. If you think your child is not coping, it may also be helpful for you to talk to their teachers.

Try to involve your child as much as possible.

Make sure your child eats well

Help your child get enough sleep

Be flexible during exams

Be flexible around exam time. When your child is revising all day, do not worry about household jobs left undone or untidy bedrooms.

Staying calm yourself can help. Remember, exams do not last forever.

The Family Lives website has more information about coping with exam stress

Health for Teens also has information and advice about how to prepare for exams and deal with exam stress

Talk about exam nerves

Encourage exercise during exams

Do not add to the pressure

Support group Childline says many children who contact them feel that most pressure at exam time comes from their family.

Listen to your child, give them support and avoid criticism.

Before they go in for a test or exam, be reassuring and positive. Let them know that failing is not the end of the world. If things do not go well, they may be able to take the exam again.

After each exam, encourage your child to talk it through with you. Discuss the parts that went well rather than focusing on the questions they found difficult. Then move on and focus on the next test, rather than dwelling on things that cannot be changed.

See Childline's advice on exam stress and pressure

Make time for treats

When to get help

Some young people feel much better when exams are over, but that's not the case for all young people.

Get help if your child's anxiety or low mood is severe, persists and interferes with their everyday life. Seeing a GP is a good place to start.

RSHE Coffee Morning

A huge thank you and well done to Ms Soneji and our Parent Ambassadors for hosting our RHSE coffee morning.

It was so lovely to see so many parents attend and engage on such important topics.

We will post the slides and video on the school website in the coming weeks for those who were unable to attend.

Holocaust Educational Trust Feedback

The Holocaust Educational Trust has written a very positive testimonial about the school and their experience of visiting/working with GHS.

A Message from your new Head of Year 7

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to formally introduce myself as the Head of Year 7.

I will be taking over the leadership of the year group from Ms. Yamoah as she begins her maternity leave following the Easter break.

While I am currently moving from a leadership role in Year 8, I bring with me two years of specialist experience as the Deputy Head of Year 7. This is a pivotal year for our students, and my priority is to ensure that the high standards and momentum they have built so far continue without interruption.

In addition to my pastoral role, I am a Maths and Physics teacher. I bring that same focus on precision and high expectations to my work as Head of Year, ensuring every student remains focused, supported, and challenged as they move into their final term of the academic year.

Looking Ahead: Communication & Support

I am keen to build strong partnerships with you to support your child’s progress. To facilitate this, I will be conducting a series of parent meetings shortly after we return from the Easter break.

Furthermore, during the Summer term, I will be hosting Coffee and Biscuit Mornings (dates to be confirmed). These will be informal opportunities for you to come into school, meet with me, and discuss any matters or concerns regarding your child’s journey at Greenford.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or the Year 7 team:

  • Head of Year: Mr. N. Al-Musawi – nalmusawi@greenford.ealing.sch.uk
  • Year 7 Pastoral Team: pastoralteam7@greenford.ealing.sch.uk

I look forward to meeting you all soon and ensuring a successful conclusion to Year 7 for all our students.

Best regards,

Mr. N. Al-Musawi
