Friday 1st May

From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

You may have noticed that we have begun to embed a new strapline for our school vision which is 'ambitious for all.' This short statement reflects what we believe in at Greenford High School - that no matter the starting point of all children, we will be relentlessly ambitious for them, whether that is academically, emotionally or in other areas of their lives.

Our mission to be ‘ambitious for all’, also reflects our high expectations for behaviour and conduct from everyone in our school community, and we continue to thank you for your support with this.

Best Wishes,

Mrs M Pye

Headteacher

Ambitious for ALL

As we settle into the summer term, we are fast approaching a crucial period in the academic calendar: the end-of-year exams. I want to take this opportunity to talk to you about our mission statement, ‘ambitious for all’.

At GHS we are ‘ambitious for all’. This doesn't mean placing undue stress on them, but it is about working consistently towards their goals. Here at Greenford High School, we are incredibly proud of the diverse, talented, and capable students in our classrooms. We want every single one of them to progress onto the next stage of their academic pathways with knowledge and skills, qualifications, character, and confidence to succeed in whatever path they choose.

There is an emphasis on recall and retrieval. This means that students should be able to learn key pieces of information across all subjects in every year group that will support them with their foundation knowledge. This is what we will be testing for the end-of-year exams.

How you can support your child in preparation for the end of year exams:

As the exams approach, your role in channelling their ambition into productive action is more important than ever. Here are a few ways we can work together to support them:

  1. Talk to them about their effort: Encourage your child to aim high, but praise the process of studying rather than just the final grade. Put together a plan that they can commit to. Some of their homework tasks will be centred around revision.
  2. Aspiration: Talk to your child about their future. What do they want to do? Where do they want to go? Helping them see the connection between their upcoming exams and their long-term goals can be a powerful motivator.
  3. Create the right environment: Ambition requires focus. Help them establish a quiet, organised space for revision at home, free from the distractions of mobile phones and social media. Whilst they are revising, please ask them to give their phone/device to you.
  4. Maintain healthy routines: A tired mind cannot perform at its best. Ensure they are getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritious meals, and taking well-earned breaks to relax and recharge.
  5. Be their anchor: Exam season can bring anxiety. Please continue to support them and check in with them before and after each exam.

We are incredibly ambitious for your children, and we know you are too. By working together, we can ensure they approach these end-of-year exams not with dread, but with the confidence and determination to show exactly what they are capable of achieving.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership.

'What I wish my parents or carers knew…': a guide for parents and carers on children's digital lives (Children's Commissioner)

The Children's Commissioner, Dame Rachel de Souza, has published a guide to help parents and carers navigate the challenge of managing children's everyday online habits. Written with direct input from children and young people, including teenagers consulted in schools and the Commissioner's Youth Ambassadors. The guide is designed to make difficult conversations easier and more regular.

The guide covers setting boundaries around phone use, talking about harmful content, and building ongoing communication that goes beyond a one-off conversation. The voice of young people runs through it, including this from one teenager: "Don't be afraid to be firm… If you are worried your child is seeing harmful content, and you don't know what they're watching, and it's affecting their behaviour, just take it that you know best, they don't."

This is a practical resource to share with parents and carers, particularly at transition points or where online harms are presenting in school.
