Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural Development at GHS

Greenford High School is dedicated to encouraging the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our students, ensuring they receive a well-rounded education that extends beyond academic success. This year, students have continued to develop socially through a wide range of PSHCE lessons, enrichment opportunities and extracurricular activities. In PSHCE, students have explored important topics such as friendship, respectful relationships and conflict management, helping them to build confidence and resilience in their daily lives. In addition, our curriculum has also featured on inclusion and citizenship, where students have learnt about British Values, and how these can be applied.
Our broad programme of clubs and societies has also encouraged teamwork, creativity and community spirit, with students enjoying activities including cricket, football, Pokemon and knitting. In addition, students across different year groups have taken part in valuable events and workshops lead by external professionals, including Year 7 sessions with the Breck Foundation on online safety, Year 9 workshops with TfL on sexual harassment on public transport, and Year 9 and 10 sessions focusing on gangs, grooming and county lines. Year 10 students also explored healthy masculinity and positive body image, supporting open and thoughtful discussion around identity and wellbeing. Students have also had the opportunity to attend a whole range of school trips throughout the year, including visits to the theatre, universities, museums and galleries.
Students have made excellent progress in their moral development through Religious Education and wider school discussions. In RE lessons, Year 8 students have been engaging with challenging moral dilemmas such as war and capital punishment, developing their ability to think critically, respectfully debate different viewpoints and reflect on ethical issues in society. Year 10 students have explored contemporary moral questions in their core RE lessons, including the impact of emerging technologies such as xenotransplantation. These topics have encouraged students to consider how beliefs, values and ethics influence decision-making in the modern world, while promoting empathy and understanding of differing perspectives.
Our cultural and spiritual provision has remained a strong part of school life throughout the year. Weekly assemblies continue to provide students with opportunities for reflection through acts of worship and discussions linked to our school values and the Greenford High School character strengths. In RE lessons, students across all year groups have deepened their understanding of the major world religions and the diversity of beliefs within our global community. We are also looking forward to celebrating International Day later this term, where students and staff will come together to recognise and celebrate the many cultures represented within our school community. This event highlights the inclusive and respectful environment we are proud to foster and gives students the opportunity to learn from and appreciate one another’s backgrounds and traditions.
