From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

We continue to focus on learning and achievement and were pleased to welcome so many parents to Year 11 parents' evening. In the coming weeks, students will be thinking carefully about their mock results and will need to be serious about their revision from this point onwards. I encourage you to speak to your child about putting together a revision timetable if they haven't already. Being prepared and organised will not only help them to succeed better, but will also help them to be less stressed in the process.

Best Wishes,

Mia Pye

Reading at Greenford

GHS is a reading school, and we encourage all students and staff to read for pleasure.  Research shows that children who read regularly for pleasure are more likely to be successful in their school work: reading increases our  vocabulary,  and teaches us how to empathise with others through experiencing their lives in the pages of a book.  ‘Stories can help keep ‘normal sad’ from tipping over into something more serious, and we can use books as part of our mental health maintenance.’   (From ‘How to be sad: Everything I've learnt about getting happier, by being sad, better’ by Helen Russell). Reading with your child is one of the best  ways in which you can help support your child’s development.

All students in Years 7 - 10 are currently reading a  shared book together once  a week during form time, on Tuesdays (Years 9 and 10) or Wednesdays (Years 7 and 8).  If your child is in Year 7, they are reading ‘Notting Hill: A West Side Story’ by Candice Carty Williams, in Year 8 they are reading ‘You Are a Champion’ by Marcus Rashford, in Year 9 they are reading ‘Needle’ by Patrice Lawrence and in Year 10 they are reading ‘Sawbones’ by Catherine Johnson. Students read out loud together with their form tutor, who helps explain new words and encourages students to discuss the challenges raised in the life of the people in the story. In this way, we encourage having a shared experience within our school community, where everyone is connected by having read the same book.  Please do ask your child about their experience of reading together with their form.

TFL Workshop for Year 9

On Friday 17th January, all year 9 students took part in a workshop led by TFL to inform them about Sexual Harassment on Public Transport.

We believe by running these workshops, our students have the knowledge to keep themselves safe.

The presenters commented on how brilliant the year 9s were. They were very mature and reflective on the content! Well done Year 9!

Last term, our young historians were given an optional project to build a castle.

Filip K 7W3 built an amazing Lego castle!

Coffee Mornings

To support our families and students, we like to host coffee mornings so that parents, students and staff can connect and find all the tools they need to be part of the Greenford Community.

This week we hosted another coffee morning....if you would like to be involved, keep an eye out on the Parent Connect and your emails.

WINTER WALK RAISING MUCH NEEDED FUND FOR OUR COUNSELLING SERVICE

This weekend, 162 teachers, parents, children and therapists are taking part in the Winter Walk (walking either a full marathon, half-marathon, 10km or 5km Family Walk around London) to raise much needed funds for the Schools Counselling Partnership, who provide a therapeutic service in our school.

Ultra Challenge, who arrange these events, have told us that this is the biggest team they have ever seen at one single event, which is testament to the value everyone puts on this service provision.

Please, please donate whatever you can afford. No amount is too little, by clicking the link below:
