From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

A reminder that the school will not be open tomorrow as it is our occasional day. School will return to normal on Monday 27th November.

I always think that academically, the autumn term is one of the most important - it is during this time that we cover an immense number of topics and really build momentum in learning. It's therefore really important that your child attends school every day and I thank all parents who are supporting us with this.

Year 11 mock exams continue over the next few weeks. If you are a Year 11 parent or carer, please congratulate them on their excellent attitudes and conduct during the mock exam season this year.

We have a number of events coming up - please do check the dates below and also check our calendar on our website at Greenford High School - School Calendar

Mrs Pye

Students Visit Southall Community Alliance for Local History Session

We are very grateful to Southall Community Alliance who are based in Southall Town Hall for their invitation to our students for a local history and arts workshop. Students were able to listen to inspiring stories about Southall's diverse and varied history and ask any questions they may have. A great morning was had by all, and students are hoping to produce a display about what they have learned, to share with other students in our school community.

Visit by TV Producer

Year 12 and 13 students were lucky to attend a workshop in school led by eminent TV Producer, Michael Tuft. Those who are interested in working in the media were able to gain first-hand knowledge of industry insider tips and knowledge

Michael Tuft has worked across British television including Channel 4, Channel 5 and the BBC as well as international streaming services such as Apple TV.

Huge thanks to Mr Tuft for his visit.

Extra-Curricular Activities at GHS

We are committed to providing a number of clubs and activities for students across the school.  These range from numerous sports clubs, Music and Drama clubs, DT, Geography, Chess, Maths clubs and more.  We also offer academic drop in clubs such as KS3 Study Space which is open to any child who would benefit from a quiet space in school where they can get their homework done. For more info about all clubs, including times, please see our clubs list on our website here.

KS3 Interim Reports - What Does it all Mean?

Your child’s Interim Reports – that you receive three times each year – contain key information about their progress and achievement.

All KS3 reports contain a grade for Attitude to Learning (A2L) in each subject.

This is graded using the following criteria:

  • 1: Excellent
  • 2: Very Good
  • 3: Satisfactory
  • 4: Requires Improvement
  • 5: Very Poor

You are also informed in this column if, in any of their subjects, there is a persistent Homework concern (with the letter ‘H’) or a serious classroom behaviour concern (with the letter ‘B’).

Attainment is reported differently in Y7, compared to Y8 and Y9.

In Y7, we use a holistic approach where, for each subject – based on the knowledge and skills they have secured – students are at one of three stages:

  • Working above their expected level
  • Working at their expected level
  • Working towards their expected level.

Then, in Y8 and Y9, we use the GCSE grading system because it allows us to track a student’s progress towards their crucial exams at the end of Y11, so the grades will be on the 9-1 scale.

Grades 9/8/7 are the top grades; grade 5 is a ‘good pass’, and grade 4 is a ‘standard pass’.

However, grades will be relatively low at KS3, with most students achieving somewhere between a grade 1 and a grade 5. This is normal and reflects where students will be at the moment.

The main thing to look out for is whether your child is making progress from one report to the other. And, of course, please spend time discussing your child’s education with them, especially after each report, as this can have a significant impact on their learning.

Do you qualify for free school meals?

Many of our families qualify for free school meals but some are missing out as they have forgotten to apply through the council. If your child had free school meals at primary school, or if your circumstances have changed, you must apply for free school meals via Ealing Council at https://fsm.bslforum.com/ealing/Dseat.jsp.  It will not happen automatically. If you need any help completing the form, please contact Ms Humphries at jhumphries@greenford.ealing.sch.uk

Post 16 Students 'Talk the Talk'

We were delighted to welcome expert trainers from the charity Talk The Talk who came into school to work with a number of Year 12 students on becoming confident communicators. We are doing a lot of work on developing students' oracy this year, with this being just one element. Well done to all of the students who were involved!
