From the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we near the end of the half term, I thank you for your support in what has been a very successful start to the school year.

Our visits to lessons show that learning is focused and thorough and most of our students are also applying themselves well in their independent learning at home, a habit that is crucial for success. Well done to all of our students.

As we move into half-term, I would ask you to please talk to your child about staying safe online and also staying safe when out and about with their friends. The Ealing Safer Schools Police team are keen that we inform you of an increase in crime-related activity amongst young people in Ealing, and we therefore ask you to ensure you know where your children are at all times. We will be sending out further details of how we will continue to keep your children safe in school, as part of a joined-up approach with police and other high schools after half-term. Some of this approach will involve screenings in school and further details will be provided shortly.

Many thanks for your support, as ever.

Mrs M Pye

Prospective Parents Evening (Open evening) for Year 7 and Post 16:

On Thursday 3rd October and Tuesday 8th October, we were so proud of all our students and staff for hosting Open evening for our prospective students and parents.

The evening had a real buzz and reminded us of how it was a pleasure to be part of the Greenford Community.

Thank you to everyone for this wonderful night.

How to get the most out of Interim 1

To keep you updated on your child’s academic progress, you will be emailed interim reports three times per year, or four times if your child is in Y10 or Y12.

Of course, we’ll discuss these grades in school, but parents’ input is also vital to ensure that students take on board the information and act on it.

So please take time to discuss every interim report with your child, starting with interim 1 which is arriving now or in the next few weeks.

Here are two examples of what a report could look like:

  1. Attainment

The grade your child is currently achieving, based on their most recent assessments.

From Y8 onwards, we use GCSE grades which range from 9-1 (with grade 9 being the top grade) and as they progress through the school these grades should be improving; at A Level, students are graded on an A-E scale.

  1. Attitude to Learning (A2L)

This is graded using the following criteria:

  • 1: Excellent
  • 2: Very Good
  • 3: Satisfactory
  • 4: Requires Improvement
  • 5: Very Poor

You are also informed in this column if, in any of their subjects, there is a persistent Homework concern (with the letter ‘H’) or a serious classroom behaviour concern (with the letter ‘B’).

Please praise and encourage your child where their A2L is positive.

Similarly, please help them to reflect where their A2L needs improvement and support them in arriving at strategies to address this.

You’ll also see attendance data – anything below 96% will impact negatively on their progress.

Finally, there is information about Behaviour Points – please have a serious discussion with them if they have any – and Character Points, which are always worthy of celebration, so please congratulate your child about them.

Thanks for your support – it really makes a difference – and please contact your child’s form tutor or their relevant subject teacher if you have any specific questions about their reports.

Learning can take place both in and out of the classroom. At Greenford, we are proud of our staff who will always find creative ways to bring learning alive to get the best from our students.

Miss Oldman and Mr Jenkinson took learning outside the classroom, looking at biodiversity and conducting a site survey. A great way to make learning fun and engage learners.

Year 8 Careers Fair

We hosted our first careers fair for year 8, who got to meet representatives from work places, universities and our very own alumni who came back to talk to our students about their journey. On the right, we have Arshdeep, who is a pilot for the RAF, and Rhea, who has just started her apprenticeship with Amazon.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Ofcom’s latest Media Use and Attitudes Report states that most children can watch streamed films on a mobile device both in and out of the home, with 80% of UK children watching films on phones, tablets or laptops ???? That’s a lot of youngsters who might be using their own gadgets to watch something suitably spooky this Halloween season ?? or perhaps, something a little too frightening.

With older children in particular, it can be difficult knowing how to manage their increasing interest in more mature content – including horror films, in many cases – let alone knowing how best to safeguard them from inappropriate material. Our free guide offers expert advice not only on the risks of exposure to horror films and other potentially upsetting content, but also on preventing young viewers from seeing this material or protecting them from being too deeply affected by it if they do
