Guided Choices for Key Stage 4
During Years 8 and 9 students will choose some subjects to study at Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11). These will be the subjects they will take for their GCSE exams.
Examinations are taken at different stages at Key Stage 4. RE GCSE, our ‘gateway GCSE’, is taken by all students at the end of Year 9. Languages and one optional choice GCSE are taken at the end of Year 10. Maths, English, Science and a second optional subject choice GCSE are taken at the end of Year 11.
The school will give students information about GCSE choices in Year 8. It’s important to choose subjects they find enjoyable, but also to keep a good balance. Some subjects are compulsory at GCSE level. These are:
- English & English Literature
If your child is studying a language in Year 8, they will continue to study this through to GCSE at the end of Year 10.
In Year 8 students will make two choices for their GCSE options, both of which will be two-year courses. One will be studied in Years 9 and 10, with the exam at the end of Year 10, and the other studied in Years 10 & 11, with the exam at the end of Year 11.
Students get the chance to review their second choice (for Years 10 and 11) during the Spring term of Year 9.
